Tillie Mauring

Tillie Mauring

Four females with the surname Mauring (Mauriņš) were members of the Philadelphia Latvian Baptist Youth Society in 1916: A. Mauring, E. Mauring, S. Mauring, and T. Mauring. However, it has been difficult to trace them in available records. It is possible that the four were sisters named Anna, Emily, Selma, and Tillie (Matilda) and that their family had earlier settled in Virginia. However, this has not been confirmed.

So far, no record has been found for A. Mauring.

Emma Mauring, 16, in 1910 worked as a servant in a home at 4925 Hazel Ave. in Philadelphia. Her birthplace was listed as Russia, but she was reported to be Yiddish. In 1920, Emma Mauring married Joseph Marsden.1

A woman named Selma Mauring, 21, in 1910 worked as a servant in a home at 4901 Baltimore Ave. in Philadelphia. She was born in Virginia, but her parents were listed as born in Germany. It was not uncommon for Latvian immigrants to tell authorities that they were German or Russian.2

Like Selma, an 18-year-old woman born in Virginia named Matilda Mauring worked as a servant in St. Margaret's Home at 5519 Germantown Road in Philadelphia. Her parents also were listed as being born in Germany. Tillie could be a nickname for Matilda. The Tillie Mauring who was a member of the youth society was born in Virginia in 1894. In 1920, she married Alfred B. Sherlock and as late as 1924, according to church records, was still a member of the youth society under the name Tillija Sherlock. The couple eventually moved to Miami, Florida. Tillie died January 7, 1978, in Dade County, Florida, at the age of 83.3

The 1916 Philadelphia city directory had listings for Emma, Selma, and Matilda (possibly Tillie). Emma and Selma lived at 1346 S. Melville St., while Matilda was at 4205 Pine St.
