Emily Gludin

Emily (Emilija) Gludin arrived in the United States in September 1911 as a passenger aboard the S.S. Kursk, sailing from Liepāja to New York1. She was from Vainode, a town in Kurzeme province close to the border between modern-day Latvia and Lithuania. Gludin, who listed her profession as a domestic, was heading to her brother-in-law S. Plūme's home at 3821 Wyalusing Ave. in Philadelphia. In 1918, Gludin married Ernest Bumbeer (Bumbear, Bumbier). Two years later, the couple lived at 869 Holly St. in Philadelphia in the Ernest and Elizabeth Luhks home, according to the 1920 census. The Luhkses also were immigrants from Latvia. Emily became a naturalized citizen in March 1944 at the age of 55.
