Where they lived

The names of the 72 individuals shown in the 1916 photographic postcard allow further exploration of their life stories, as well as the ability to establish their residences. Although not every person shown on the postcard can be readily found in the 1920 U.S. census, the majority has been. The census also reveals who else lived in the household. From this, it is clear that the Latvian Baptists were concentrated in West Philadelphia, near their meeting house at the corner of Preston and Ogden streets, which the congregation purchased in 1910.

In the map below, the clusters indicate how many individuals of Latvian ancestry lived in specific households. Single individuals often were boarders or domestic employees in a non-Latvian household. Clusters with large numbers may indicate two or more families living at one location.
